Secondary School Students’ Text Possession, Attitude to English Language Learning and Home Background as Factors Affecting Their Learning of English Language

The English language enjoys a high status in Nigeria. In the school system, is compulsory subject from upper primary level onwards. However, it has been observed that students perform poorly subject. Several reasons have adduced for this. While previous studies focused on several learner factors, few empirical exist students’ attitude to learning Language, home background and possession of recommended Language textbooks. Against this background, study investigated text possession, as factors affecting Language. adopted descriptive survey research design. sample comprised 333 senior secondary Benin City. Three questions were raised. Data collected using an instrument titled ‘Text Possession, Attitude Home Background Questionnaire’ (TPAHQ, r= .74). Results revealed positive attitudes toward enabling effective addition, do not possess It teachers should use engaging teaching methods sustain towards Similarly, parents continue ensure their homes are conducive learning.
